2016 J.League Slogans
AFC Champions league 2016 Groups (almost) finalised
AFC Champions League 2016
The only Japanese team with a fixed place in the 2016 AFC Champions League before the Emperor’s Cup victory – Sanfrecce Hiroshima – are in Group F with FC Seoul and Buriram United, plus a play-off winner to be determined.
With Gamba’s Emperor’s Cup victory over Urawa Reds the Osaka team slot into Group G of the 2016 AFC Champions League where they will face Melbourne Victory, Suwon Samsung Bluewings, and another from February’s playoffs.
Emperor’s Cup runners-up Urawa Red Diamonds, meanwhile, slip into Group H where they will meet reigning champions Guangzhou Evergrande, Sydney FC, and the winner of a Playoff that could well be (should be?) Pohang Steelers.
Meanwhile, a place in Group E is up for grabs by FC Tokyo – Japan’s fourth team in the competition – should they beat the winner of the clash between Chonburi and Yangon United in their playoff 2 on February 9th.

Nabisco Cup Round-Up April 8th matches.
A late goal saved Sanfrecce Hiroshima from defeat against Shonan Bellmare in one of last night’s J.League Yamazaki Nabisco Cup Group A games. Takuma Asano scored his second of the game in additional time to level the scores at 2-2 and save Sanfrecce’s blushes. Bruno Cesar and Shota Kobayashi scored for the J1 new boys.
Elsewhere in Group A, Matsumoto Yamaga took maximum points in a 3-1 away win at Ventforet Kofu. After Takuma Abe had opened the scoring for the home side, Tatsuya Sakai scored his first-ever goal in Japanese football for Yamaga. And then he scored again! Naoki Maeda scored the away team’s other goal.
In the final match in the group – FC Tokyo had the night off in the seven team initial stage – Albirex Niigata triumphed over Sagan Tosu on the only goal of the game from Ryohei Yamazaki.
In Group B, Nagoya Grampus took the lead three times over Montedio Yamagata – on goals from Akira Takeuchi, Asahi Yada and Milivoje Novakovic – but each time the home team pulled level. The final goal in this six-goal thriller came from Hiroki Bandai’s header in the 92nd minute. Grampus stay top of the group, three points clear of Vissel Kobe who have a game in hand on the leaders. Vissel were held to a 0-0 draw at Vegalta Sendai.
Group B’s other match produced a 2-0 away win for Kawasaki Frontale over Shimizu S-Pulse. Goals from Kentaro Moriya and Elsinho gave Frontale their first points of the Nabisco campaign.
The next Nabisco Cup matches take place on April 22nd.
Sanfrecce Hiroshima 2015 Season Preview
After Sanfrecce Hiroshima’s first J1 Championship three years back, they were picked apart by Urawa Reds, and then won another Championship. They won J1 again… and were picked apart by Reds again. Finally, the losses told and Gamba Osaka took over the J1 reigns last season but, just to be consistent, Reds have picked up Naoki Ishihara for 2015, as Sanfrecce continue to hemorrhage players.
2015 begins with talisman left (wing) back Hwang Seok-Ho (scorer of some very important goals last season) jumping ship to Kashima Antlers and Yojiro Takahagi leaving for Western Sydney Wanderers (see page 34 of Issue 15 of JSoccer Magazine).
The biggest transfer news of the new campaign is possibly that Tsukasa Shiotani is still with the club and, with Hiroki Mizumoto, Kazuhiko Chiba will look to keep it “tight at the back”. With the aging – and rarely seeing-a-full-90-minutes – Hisato Sato as the main fulcrum up front, accompanied by (dare I say it, or perhaps give it inverted commas?) “Japan international” Yusuke Minagawa looking for goals, Sanfrecce are looking short up front. Tokushima Vortis have sent over Douglas, but there’ll need to be a huge improvement from him to make Sanfrecce a top team.
In midfield, Kyoto Sanga have been raided and Kohei Kudo has joined the team, but the squad is definitely looking a little shallow. Toshihiro Aoyama, Shiotani and Sato may feel the pressure of keeping this team on course… manager Hajime Moriyasu is a tactical genius in this writer’s opinion, and Sanfrecce will in no way be struggling in the relegation zone (famous last words?), but anything better than a mid-table finish may be a stretch.

Yojiro Takahagi Down Under! Joins Yusuke Tanaka at Western Sydney!
This excitement factor, and his ability to create and score goals, saw him make his international debut for the Blue Samurai in 2013.
Red & Black fans will remember the 28 year old from the AFC Champions League when he orchestrated a 3-1 win against us in the first leg of the Round of 16.

CEO John Tsatsimas was very pleased with the capture of the accomplished playmaker.
“We are very pleased to have been able to do this piece of business in the transfer window,” said Tsatsimas.
“Takahagi is a very experienced and talented attacking player who has the versatility to play in a number of positions in the front third.
“We had the opportunity to play against him in the Round of 16 in last year’s Champions League so we know firsthand the player’s ability and attitude on the pitch and we are very excited for him to join the squad.
“With caps for Japan, plenty of ACL experience and at 28 years old we have found a player that is hungry for more success, something as a Club we are all striving for.”
Starting his youth career at Sanfrecce Hiroshima, Takahagi joined the senior ranks and, aside from a one season loan to then J-2 side Enhime FC in 2006, was a consistent first team player who made over 250 appearances for the Club.
Takahagi has been signed on a short-term Champions League contract for the Group Stage and potential Round of 16 matches.

Vissel Kobe vs Sanfrecce Hiroshima at Home's Stadium 15.30, Dec.1st
Team News
Vissel Kobe – MF Tanaka is suspended. FW Yoshida undergoing tests, DF Hayashi out for the season.
Sanfrecce Hiroshima – no suspensions,
Head to Head – 9 wins for Sanfrecce, just 2 for Vissel, and 4 draws since 2004.
Match Preview – Vissel Kobe simply need a win to save themselves. A draw would see both Gamba and Albirex able to overtake them with a win. If Cerezo, one place above Vissel lose, it would allow Vissel to overtake them . . . plenty of permutations and Vissel have their fate in their own hands, unlike Gamba and Albirex below them. Tanaka is suspended while Sanfrecce have no suspensions or injuries or . . . anything to play for!
Sanfrecce clinched the Championship last week and could well be hungover, or just simply unmotivated. Either way Vissel fans will be hoping for an underpar Championship-winning team to visit! Vissel have previous experience in surviving on the final day and this could stand them in good stead for this huge game. Vissel fired coach Nishino two games back and caretaker boss Ryo Adachi won the first match in charge (again – he also took over Vissel temporarily earlier in the season when coach Wada was moved on!) but went down, narrowly, to Kashiwa Reysol, with ten men for the best part of the game, and now find themselves with this final big match to finish off the season, again! This is tough to call but I think we should EXPECT a DRAW – which may still not be enough for Vissel!
