Gamba 2-2 Grampus – post-match comment from Stojkovic, and much more from Joe Broadfoot!

With the Euros waning into insignificance with the elimination of England, and the ‘much-fancied’ Russia (okay, I admit it was me who backed the 20/1 shots to lift the trophy), I thought it was time to wander into a world where football is still played with passion and skill.

Watching Gamba Osaka play is something akin to watching Arsenal, as I’ve mentioned to netizens before, with all the accompanying frustration and joy. And what could be better than watching Arsene Wenger’s old club, Nagoya Grampus, take on the mighty Asian Champions League perennials? Except, this year, Gamba’s place amongst Asia’s elite is under threat. A poor start to the season has drizzled all over optimistic fans expecting a third-placed finish. Instead, fifth will suffice. Mmm, sounds kind of familiar, doesn’t it?

Thanks to Alan Gibson of JSoccer Magazine, I was fortunate enough to meet Gamba’s very approachable president, Mr Kikuo Kanamori. I also managed to see what happens in the Cuerva Nord, which is the place occupied by Gamba’s most vociferous supporters or ‘ultras’. Not content with just vocally getting behind their team, they even throw in some synchronised dancing when the team scores. It hasn’t been happening as much as it normally does this season, so the dancers have been taking an unwelcome break. But the singing goes on regardless.

Inevitably, it was Josh Kennedy who set up the goal, with his head, to put Kensuke Nagai on the score-sheet. The same combination struck again as Nagoya raced into a two-goal lead after just 18 minutes. Yet, there was no sign of any heckling from the Gamba supporters. A bit of consternation perhaps when some passes went astray, but that was it. The boys with the megaphones continued to cattle-prod Gamba’s ever-willing followers into injecting some much-needed confidence into a nervous-looking team.

The ‘ultras’ had the opposite effect on me, I must confess, as Alan accidentally led me into a private members’ area of the terraces. While he disappeared into a throng of noisy blue-and-black shirted fans, I wondered if my face would end up black and blue too for having the temerity to cross a line I didn’t know existed. A tough-looking fan with dark glasses told me in no uncertain terms that I couldn’t pass. ‘No’, he said, as he barred my way. While I waited for Alan to return, I looked along the terraces and saw that some standing areas had seats. Not the most comfortable looking ones, I must admit. The sort of seat that might make you sing out in pain. No doubt, Gamba’s planned new stadium will have ‘none of that sort’, as Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood once said of the Gunners’ majority shareholder, Stan Kroenke. We’ll have to wait until 2014 to find out if my guess is correct about seating arrangement in Osaka’s new stadium.

And will Gamba’s new stadium improve results? Well, even in the old stadium, they need to improve fast. If not, Gamba’s new 36,000-capacity ground (which could hold up to 40,000 if the president gets his way) could be hosting J2 matches. Luckily for Gamba, the club appear to be in capable hands off-the-field, at least. President Kanamori-san has never been fearful of addressing the fans and, likewise, they are not afraid to voice their opinions. Right now, they’re of the opinion that something must be done soon to arrest the decline. Masanobu Matsunami’s transition from assistant manager to manager has been less smooth than it might have been. The legendary outgoing boss, Akira Nishino, has cast a bigger shadow over his successor’s successor (yes, we could go on about the Wagner Lopes and Serrao team that started the season as management, but that’s a different story) than is healthy for Gamba. It was almost inevitable, given Nishino’s success, that this would happen (although fans of the Liverpool boot room dynasty may beg to differ!). To make matters worse, Nishino has pitched up just down the road at Vissel Kobe, transforming Gamba’s ‘little brother’ into a respectable mid-table team (and improving weekly, it seems). Meanwhile, the dark cloud of past glories will hover over Gamba, until they shake off the threat of relegation. No matter how hard the ultras sing, the hard work has to be done on the pitch and, miraculously, some of it came to fruition against Nagoya.

‘On a wing and prayer’ is a phrase that came to mind, as Gamba clawed their way back into the game with a hotly-disputed Sota Nakazawa diving header. Grampus were furious that Nakazawa was ruled onside, but their protests were futile.
When Takahiro Futagawa equalised with just 15 minutes left on the clock, the Nishino cloud was temporarily lifted by a grateful euphoria which swept around the stadium. Yet Gamba so nearly surrendered even that, with goalkeeper Yosuke Fujigaya rescuing the home side late on as Grampus went on to almost score from a counter attack. Fujigaya saved with his feet and the points were shared.
Would a point be considered enough for Grampus boss Dragan ‘Piksi’ Stojkovic? He seemed mildly disappointed when he spoke at the post-match press conference: ‘It seems like we dropped two points, but I think we played very well in the first half and Gamba played very well in the second half. This is my first impression.

When asked if he was disappointed by the result, he repelled the poor journalist with, ‘It’s Gamba’s problem that they don’t win at home, not ours.

‘We were very close to scoring the third goal when we played with three strikers: Tulio, Yuki Maki and Kennedy, but we were also very close to losing. Anything can happen in the last few minutes. 2-2 is a good result. Away against Gamba, no problem.
Gamba’s first goal looked a tad offside and on that very subject, Piksi commented diplomatically on the decision: ‘A kind of mystery to me, from my position.’

Later, he privately ranted a lot more, but it was “off the record” for sure!

Piksi admitted Grampus’s problems may be exacerbated in the coming weeks by absentees: ‘I think Kensuke Nagai will go to London. Keiji Tamada had an operation today and will be out for 3 months.’

However, he could still spare a thought for his opponents: ”Gamba are in trouble. If we had played 10 percent better – easy win. They need something up front.’

Whatever Gamba needs, they need it soon or they will face at least one season in J2. And neither the fans, the president, or the players deserve such a fate.

Meanwhile, I think Piksi deserves the challenge of the English Premier League and perhaps, one day, he will follow in the footsteps of his former Grampus mentor, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.

J1 June 30th Round-Up, Matchday 17

At the top it was as you were, with the 1st and 2nd place teams – Vegalta Sendai and Sanfrecce Hiroshima – fighting out a thrilling 2-2 draw – two goals from Brazilian striker Wilson for the top team, with J1 top scorer Hisashi Sato and Koji Moriasaki on the scoresheet for Sanfrecce.

In 3rd place, we saw Urawa Reds held by a buoyant Cerezo Ozaka side who were looking for a win to send Hiroshi Kiyotake off to the Bundesliga on a high. Reds scored the opener through Suzuki after a nice exchange of passes with Kashiwagi opened up the defence. Kakitani scored the point-securing equaliser in the final moments after relentless 2nd half pressure from the home team had bought no reward. In the end, Reds will be happy to come away with a point.

In the other half of Osaka we saw eight goals at Gamba Osaka v. Kashiwa Reysol. Nothing unusual there, to be honest, except it used to be Gamba who scored more than their visitors! Today they capitulated to Reysol 6-2, with three goals coming from Sawa. Reysol were 3-0 ahead within 20 minutes, but Gamba pulled it back to 3-2 by half time amd the stage was set for the big comeback. But Reysol tore up that script in the 2nd half and Gamba look set for a long struggle for survival in the second half of the season. A telling statistic – Gamba 10 goal attempts, while Reysol registered nine “shots” and scored six goals!

J1 saw another draw between Yokohama F.Marinos and Nagoya Grampus. After two of the same in midweek against Gamba, Josh Kennedy gave another goal on a plate to Nagai for the away goal. Marinos’ goal came from good pressure forcing a mistake in the Nagoya midfield, Ono giving the through pass for Marquinos to run onto and blast home as the keeper came out to challenge.

Vissel Kobe continued their improvement under coach Akira Nishino, taking all three points away at Kawasaki Frontale through a wonder strike from Ken Tokura. Vissel continue to build slowly and look a good bet to move up the table as confidence grows.

Omiya Ardija heaped more misery on Shimizu S-Pulse with a 1-0 victory, the goal coming in injury time of the 2nd half when Daigo Watanabe latched onto a through ball from Rafael – possibly his final touch for the team before a move to Brazil we hear – and Omiya took the points.

Another draw came at Niigata where Albirex earned a rare point against Kashima Antlers. themselves, not doing as well as they would have hoped. Kashima took the lead through Dutra, while Michael popped the equaliser in from a low right wing cross to earn that precious point.

Jubilo Iwata overcame FC Tokyo by a 3-1 scoreline, making it look easy as Tokyo succumbed to goals from Shuto Yamamoto, Miyazaki (his first J1 goal) and Cho to halt their recent mini-slump.

Sagan Tosu registered another home win, but made hard work of it, with the 1-0 winner coming in the 95th minute from Mizunuma. Consadole must have been thinking they had another point!

J.League Quick Review Saturday June 23rd

Last weekend we saw SIX away wins from the nine J1 games, and plenty of goals. This weekend was slightly different – THREE 0-0 draws for a start and the goals coming from the bottom of the table.

Gamba Osaka put four past Consadole Sapporo through an Endo free kick, a Kurata long range special, a final minute goal from Takei and an early own goal, credited, so far, to Paulinho! Gamba take on Nagoya on Wednesday night next.

Kashima Antlers must have thought they had the three points wrapped up – from a long range Ogasawara blast – until the referee decided to hand Reysol a PK in added time. Leandro Domingues kick was saved, but Kondo got to the rebound to make it 1-1 and save a point. Koroki had a goal correctly chalked off for offside, also.

FC Tokyo were dire last week so a comfortable 2-0 win against plummeting Cerezo – goals from Hasegawa and Lucas will buoy their fans ahead of their game against Reysol in midweek.

Nahoya Grampus continued to improve, while Jubilo Iwata cntinued to drop points. A Fujimoto free kick on the stroke of half time, and a Nagai shot from a one-two with Fujimoto immediately after the break gave Nagoya a 2-0 win.

Shimizu S-Pulse are probably disappointed to drop points at home to Sagan Tosu, but their lack of goals this season is not helping. Today’s goal was a Genki Omae PK, before Ikeda pulled a goal back and earned Sagan a point. Shimizu’s next goal will be their 1000th in J.League play.

Samfrecce Hiroshima will be disappointed not to make up ground on Vegalta on top with this 0-0 draw with struggling Omiya Ardija. Neither team had a clear cut chance today as the defences did their work and the final passes were not quite there.

Urawa Reds frustrated Vegalta Sendai, playing a very efficient defensive game a home to add to the scoreless games in J1 today. With so many of the higher-placed teams drawing or losing, the league table gets closer together. Tatsuya Tanaka had a late goal canceled out for offside, TV replays were, of course, inconclusive!

In the Kanagawa Derby Yokohama F.Marinos failed to score yet again but will probably be happy with a 0-0 draw, and a point from high-flying, and high-scoring, Kawasaki Frontale.

See you next week, but don’t forget the two games on Wednesday night!

J1 Matchday Report June 16th, 2012

J1 threw up SIX away wins today, with three home wins and no draws as some lower teams picked up points and some teams from the upper reaches, struggled.

Vegalta Sendai 4-1 Consadole Sapporo
Vegalta Sendai stayed clear at the top of the division with a 4-1 win over hapless Consadole Sapporo, with two goals from veteran Yanagisawa, one from Wilson – his 6th of the season – and a superb header from Nakahara – his first of the season, rounding off the home team scoring. Consadole could only get on the scoresheet from an own goal!

(thanks to H.Setsuda for the picture)

Kashima Antlers 2-3 Nagoya Grampus
Kashima Antlers hosted an inconsistent Nagoya Grampus, with Nagai getting a start in place of the injured Tamada, and it was Nagai that was instrumental in ensuring that Nagoya took all three points. Antlers opened the scoring through Koroki’s 7th of the season, before the Nagai Show began – his first, the equaliser, was a right foot blast. He then set up Kanazaki on a plate for the 2nd before Motoyama made it 2-2 as Antlers got back into the game. But Nagai scored again with 86 minutes on the clock with a superb shot across the keeper and into the corner to make the final score Kashima Antlers 2-3 Nagoya Grampus.

Omiya Ardija 2-4 Kashiwa Reysol
Omiya Ardija has themselves a new manager in Zdenko Verdenik and a new formation of 4-4-2 with Cho pushed up front. While Carlinhos gave the home team hope with the opener on 9 minutes, Reysol were soon level through an exquisite first time volley lob from Leandro Domingues and then a right foot curler from Jorge Wagner. Junya Tanaka increased the lead before half time and Kudo added to it just after the break, and the rout looked on. But then Omiya tightened up and really had enough chances to even win the game, but could only manage to pull it back to a final score of 4-2, through a scrambled goal from Cho.

Albirex Niigata 1-0 Shimizu S-Pulse
Seiya Fujita got the only goal of the match with their first goal attempt in the closing stage of the 1st half after S-Pulse had rained in the shots! S-Pulse were frustrated by Niigata, who gained a long-awaited win in the first match for new manager Yanagishita. Of note – both of Niigata’s Brazilians were yellow carded for simulation in the 2nd half!

Jubilo Iwata 1-3 Vissel Kobe
Jubilo had won three in-a-row going in to this game while Vissel Kobe were yet to register a win for new coach Akira Nishino. A shock, certainly for the home fans, was in store as 19 year old Keijiro Ogawa hit a hat trick of supreme confidence for Vissel to take the points!!
Match ball and hero interview for Keijiro Ogawa! The revival, and the march to the ACL begins here!

Cerezo Osaka 1-4 Sanfrecce Hiroshima
The fans turned up in torrential rain to get the chance to see their hero Kiyotake before he leaves for the London Olympics and then the Bundesliga. Bo Kyung Kim will also be on his way to England, if my sources are correct, by the way! The home fans were disappointed… Sanfrecce took apart Cerezo, and showed why they are challenging for the top of J1.
Takahagi scored his 2nd of the season to start the scoring for Sanfrecce. Kakitani will claim the equaliser although it took a wicked deflection. 1-1 at the break, but a goal from Sato, and two for Ishihara won the game for Sanfrecce. To emphasise the domination by the away team, Sato also had a goal chalked off for offside and missed a PK!

Gamba Osaka 1-2 Urawa Reds
By the time Umesaki won the game for Urawa Reds in the final moments of added time, Gamba could well have been six goals ahead and must surely learn from this result that they must take their chances. As with the loss against Sagan Tosu, Gamba dominated possession, and racked up goal attempts and corners but live to regret another wasted three points.

Sagan Tosu 0-1 Kawasaki Frontale
Sagan lost their unbeaten home record to a single goal on a header from Tasaka with ten minutes to play. Tosu had their chances but the points went to Frontale.

Yokohama F. Marinos 1-0 FC Tokyo
Yuji Ono had a nice flick into net ruled out – wrongly it turned out – for offside before Hyodo scored the only goal of the game just after the half hour mark. Hyodo almost had enough before half time but was foiled by the outstretched foot of keeper Gonda, while the FC Tokyo keeper also kept out a wicked Shunsuke Nakamura free kick to keep the score to 1-0 and give the win to Marinos.

Report J1 – May 25th Friday – Gamba Osaka 2-3 Sagan Tosu

Coach Masanobu Matsunami handed youngster Uchida his first start of the season, replacing Niwa at right back, and bringing Futagawa back into midfield for his first start in seven matches and the changes paid early dividends when Futagawa opened the scoring in the 3rd minute! Paulinho robbed a dithering defender, advanced to the byeline and his cross just cleared Sato in the centre, but Futagawa was on the spot, controlling the ball with his thigh and volleying home from close range.

Gamba continued to press and controlled the game with ease, with Kimura in the home goal a virtual spectator for the first half an hour. The familiar confident Gamba passing game seemed to have returned, the early goal obviously helping the confidence of the struggling team. Gamba could have gone 2-0 up when Konno hit the post with a header from an Endo corner, and a slick passing move ended with a square pass to Futagawa in a great position but the goalscorer completely missed his kick when a 2nd goal beckoned.

Sagan had failed to get anywhere near the goal as half time approached and had resorted to countless fouls and desperate tackles to stay in the game when Tozin went in high and deliberately on Uchida as the clock ticked past 40 minutes – a dangerous challenge. The fact that Uchida did not go down and did not make a meal of the challenge (while the Tosu forward DID stay down!) probably prevented the red card. Needless to say Tozin recovered with no ill effects when he realised he’d got away with just a yellow! It is worth noting that Min Woo Kim, who has been putting in some good performances for the away team was being kept well under wraps by Uchida, a Gamba youth graduate.

Gamba really should have been more than a single goal up at half time, with a Kurata through ball setting Sato free, but the forward poked the ball inches wide of the post as the keeper advanced and added time approached. It was all Gamba in the last few minutes, as they looked to extend a lead that was deservedly theirs but it stayed 1-0 at the break with Sagan not registering a single goal attempt in the half.

Sagan came out a little more after the break but still had just the Toyoda header that flew past a post to show for their efforts as the hour mark approached. Meanwhile, Kurata, in particular, was growing in stature and confidence and had a couple of chances – one blocked and one high and wide when a shot on target would have been a finish to a great move – before he was set free by Futagawa, with a sublime through pass, but an extra touch and three defenders stopped the Gamba midfielder from finishing off the move.

Abe replaced Paulinho on 65 minutes and, again, the change made the difference, as Uchida and Abe exchanged passes on the edge of the area, slipped the ball out to Endo and his low cross was turned in by Sato to finally make it 2-0!

And then, it was 2-1! A long throw (probably a foul throw, actually, but when do assistant referees ever take action on that back foot lifting?!) and a flicked header crept in off the far post.

Sagan must have sensed a chance to get back into the game but a deliberate hack at the calves of Abe – unpunished but for a free kick – didn’t help settle their defence, but Endo’s free kick was high, wide and not at all handsome. But then the referee decided he’d help the away team out and allowed Kurata to be taken down from behind, without action and Sagan took the ball upfield and there was an almighty goalmouth scramble which, if the away forwards had managed to get a goal out of would have been a huge injustice. When the ball finally went out, Kurata needed treatment and was, in fact replaced by Takei before the game restarted.

As Gamba continued to hold the ball for long periods, the fouls mounted as the home team got kicked and pushed, and the referee started to let things go, there were so many infringements. And then the official gave a foul as Sato attacked a cross – even though it was Kobayashi’s head well down, NOT Sato’s foot high! Kobayashi was probably close to a card – or two – when he got replaced in the 84th minute as the away team tried to hold back the blue and black tide. Abe, Sato and Endo combined in the 85th minute but the result was just another corner as the clock ran down. And then Sagan were level from nothing. A superb curling shot from Fujita into the top corner against the run of play as Gamba’s lead evaporated.

With minutes to go, Futagawa was withdrawn as Matsunami threw on Rafinha looking for maximum points and Gamba went for the win in added time of three minutes. And get it they almost did, when a quick throw found Rafinha, and his low cross was desperately hacked away as Abe looked to finish off the chance.

Going into the game, in such a lowly position, Gamba would probably have settled for a point but, after controlling so much of this game, they will be disappointed not to come out with a win, and, to make it worse, after constant pressure and desperate punches from the keeper, time ran out…. but the referee was obviously too scared of the consequences to blow the final whistle as the ball broke free (clutching at straws, I know, but considering the ball didn’t even go out in added time, the time was up as the keeper punched clear!) and Sagan broke, three on two, and took all three points.

Key points? Gamba may have returned to old ways, but those old ways included scoring more goals than the opposition…. if the referee allows numerous fouls without showing the cards, it’s time to dish out a few fouls of your own!

There was scattered booing and whistles from some of the Gamba fans but it seems that most will have seen the promising signs that this team showed and now it is up to everyone to pull together and make a performance like this count for something.

Kimura, Uchida, Nakazawa, Konno, Fujiharu, Myojin, Endo, Kurata (Takei, 73), Futagawa (Rafinha, 88), Paulinho (Abe, 65), Sato

Stalemate!

There was so much to play for this afternoon, an opportunity to continue our undefeated run at home and reach within two points of the top.

I had to reshuffle our selection, as our Olympic hopefuls (Muramatsu and Yoshida) were called up for national team duty, Alex (Brosque) was serving his red card suspension, and Ono, Iwashita and Edamura are recovering from injuries.

Kang, Kota, Kobayashi, and Nabeta got their first starts of the season in the J.League competition. It was important to have the right balance in the selection, and the triangle of Kang, Kobayashi and Kota (Sugiyama) was going to be the key to our success. We faced an experienced and defensively organized Marinos. The stat that really stood out was our starting members average age compared to the Marinos (S-Pulse average age 23.82 as opposed to Marinos 30.27).

Marinos defended well, and we did not help our cause with poor ball circulation in the first half. The low tempo favored Marinos, and they looked dangerous on several counter attacks and set-piece situations. Hayashi, Calvin (Jong-a-Pin) and Hiraoka did well to keep a clean sheet all afternoon. Takagi, who came close twice, and Kawai, had the best chances of the first half for our orange men.

There were good discussions at half time, and we improved a great deal in the second half. With every minute passing we improved, as we increased the speed of play and started to have longer meaningful possessions. The last 30 minutes was the best period of the game, and we created enough chances to win the game. Kobayashi and Sho (Ito) had the best chances to give us maximum points.

A frustrating result, but we are in good position after 13 matches, trailing the top by only four points. Encouraging fact, we have beaten all three teams above us in the table. (Sendai, Hiroshima and Iwata). With our team leading the league with the least goals conceded, (11) we have to improve our efficiency, creativity, precision and decisiveness in the final third of the field to challenge for the J.League trophy. The three weeks league break for the World Cup 2014 Qualifiers is timely, as we will utilize this period to get our players healthy and improve individually and collectively in our attacking part of the game.

Vissel Kobe and Chonburi FC Look to the Future…. Together!

Officials from Thai Premier League team Chonburi FC, currently 6th in the league and through to the last 16 of the AFC Cup, arrived in Kobe last weekend to sign a partnership agreement with Vissel Kobe.

Vissel chairman Koichi Kanaya traveled to Bangkok last week to sign the forms with Chonburi counterpart Vitthaya Khunpleum and then the Thai delegates came to Kobe to complete the dual press conferences.

The partnership comes with the slogan “One Passion, Walk Together” and both clubs hope to benefit in increasing knowledge in the playing areas, as well as coaching, and even football tourism.

Officially, the agreement allows for senior and junior coach exchange in a bid to increase the knowledge of both teams through different styles of football in Asia, while a marketing partnership will help raise the profiles of both clubs.

Chonburi is managed by Withaya Laohakul, who played in Japan for Yanmar Diesel in 1977-78 and for Matsushita Denki in 1986-87, scoring 20 goals in 65 games from midfield. He then spent seven years as Matsushita / Gamba Osaka from 1988 to 1995 and returned to manage Gainare Tottori from 2007 to 2010. Adding to the Japanese connection, the team includes 25 year old Japanese midfielder Kazuto Kushida.
